Scrap metal FAQ

Straight answers about selling scrap metal in Birmingham: what we buy, what to bring, and how to get paid more.

What scrap metal does Rather Recycling buy?

We buy ferrous and non-ferrous scrap. That includes copper (bare bright, #1 and #2 tubing, roofing copper), brass, aluminum (cans, rims and scrap), stainless steel, insulated copper wire like THHN and Romex, electric motors, alternators, lead batteries, steel (heavy melting, prepared and rotors), tin, and electronic scrap like PC towers and computer wire.

Where is Rather Recycling located?

Our yard is at 323 Finley Blvd, Birmingham, AL 35204. Call 205-224-4044 if you need directions or want to check on a load before you head over.

What are your hours?

We're open Monday through Friday from 7:30am to 4:30pm and Saturday from 7:30am to 2:00pm. We're closed on Sunday.

How do I find out today's scrap metal prices?

Scrap prices follow the commodity markets and move often, so the best way to get an accurate number is to call us at 205-224-4044 and tell us what you have. The grade and condition of your material make a big difference in what it's worth.

What do I need to bring to sell scrap metal?

Bring a valid government-issued photo ID. Alabama law requires scrap metal buyers to record the seller's identification on each transaction, so we can't buy material without it.

What's the difference between #1 and #2 copper?

#1 copper is clean, unalloyed copper pipe, tubing or heavy wire with no solder, paint, fittings or heavy corrosion. #2 copper is still unalloyed copper but has solder, paint, fittings, tarnish or other attachments. Cleaning up your copper and cutting off fittings is usually the easiest way to move it into a better grade.

Is bare bright copper worth more than other copper?

Yes. Bare bright is the top grade of scrap copper. It's clean, stripped, uncoated copper wire with no insulation, tarnish or solder, and it typically brings the highest price per pound of any copper grade.

Should I strip insulated copper wire before I bring it in?

It depends on the wire. Heavy single-conductor wire like THHN has a lot of copper and can be worth stripping if you have the time. Thin or multi-conductor wire usually isn't worth the labor. Either way, we buy insulated wire as-is.

Do I need to separate my metals?

You don't have to, but you'll get paid more if you do. Mixed loads are usually graded at the value of the lowest material in the pile. Keep copper, brass, aluminum and steel apart and you'll get the full value for each.

Do you work with businesses and contractors?

Yes. We work with commercial, industrial and manufacturing accounts, contractors, and individuals. If your business generates scrap on a regular basis, ask us about container service.

Do you offer scrap metal containers?

Yes. We offer container services for businesses and jobsites that generate steady scrap. Call 205-224-4044 to talk through your material and volume.

Do you buy aluminum cans?

Yes. We buy aluminum cans along with aluminum rims, aluminum scrap and other aluminum grades.

Scrap prices move daily.

Call before you load up and we'll give you today's number for your material. Tell us what it is and roughly how much you have.
